General Information about Fuerteventura

Climate

Fuerteventura is ideal for families and sun-worshippers as it enjoys an all year round mild, fairly constant average temperature of 20.8°C. There is very little rainfall - an average of 105 mm per year, a lot of sunshine, and winds blow in from a north easterly direction.

Beaches

Most of Fuerteventura's beaches are the type dreams are made of with clean white sand and inviting crystal clear waters although there are other types of beach to choose from including black (volcanic) sand and shingle. Indeed, the 152 beaches that make up Fuerteventura including Islote de Lobo meaning "the little wolf island" are one of its main attractions.

Landscapes

There is very little vegetation to be found on Fuerteventura. Instead geomorphic formations are the order of the day, which are fascinating to observe. The most interesting examples of such formations are to be found where recent volcanic activity has occurred and indeed, at some of these sites Geologists have discovered fossils providing invaluable insights into the island's heritage.
Such areas include, the Dunes of Corralejo (Dunas de Corralejo), the Island of the Wolves nature reserve (Isla de Lobos Parque Natural), Tindaya Mountain (La montaña de Tindaya), various Lavascapes such as Bayuyo, Arenas and Arrabales and finally, the coast of Puerto de la Peña.

Antigua

In Antigua, two different types of architecture can be found. The traditional kind used mainly by the natives of Fuerteventura and larger, more modern houses and villas generally with two floors and anywhere between two to four bedrooms.
Traditional dwellings tend to be simple structures built on one floor some having a small loft. Walls are either whitewashed, cemented or made of stone. Roofs are mainly loaf-shaped, the interior of the dwelling being either L or U-shaped. The larger houses and villas are more popular with other nationalities and a variety of styles and building materials can be seen in such abodes.
Antigua is in the centre of the island and in the past has proved to be the most popular place of residence for Fuerteventura's inhabitants.
Numerous plains dot its landscape along with cornmills and clusters of small villages typically reminiscent of local, traditional architecture. We find various churches of historic interest here along with a castle in Caleta de Fuste built in the 18th century for the purpose of defending the island.

Other Areas and Places of Interest

Betancuria Rural Park

This is a large area, which includes the municipalities of Betancuria and Puerto del Rosario. Within the park itself we find the mountains of Antigua, Tuineje and Betancuria. It is a natural zone declared a rural park with a history of cattle rearing.
Important geological and morphological discoveries have been made here.

Corralejo Nature Reserve

Famous for its coastline, dunes, lavascape and a volcanic cone known as Montaña Roja, Corralejo Nature Reserve is a must for nature lovers and botanists alike. Unusual plants can be found here and the natural scenery in all its glory is simply breathtaking.

The nature reserve of Islote de Lobos

Wolves island (its name) used to be a meeting place for amazing numbers of a species of seal known as Mediterranean Monk Seals. Although they no longer gather here, the rocky landscape and turquoise waters surrounding this inlet are well worth investigating and plant lovers can find many unusual species here.

Jandia Natural Park

The national symbol of Fuerteventura is the Jandia cactus, a plant species endemic to this area. The highest peak on the island can be found within this protected space and with its many types of habitat and spectacular landscapes, Jandia is a photographer's paradise.

Las Salinas

Sea salt is harvested and produced here. Using traditional methods, the sea's tides fill waiting reservoirs. These reservoirs, heated by the sun cause the water to evaporate leaving formations of sea salt as a result.

Malpais Grande

Taking in the municipalities of Antigua and Tuineje, this large area offers stunning landscapes, the main attraction being its volcanic lavascape. Many years ago the ground shook and molten lava was expulsed from Fuerteventura's volcano, the reminder of which can be seen here today.

Matorral Beach

In the municipality of Pájara, Matorral Beach is on the coast, east of Morro Jable. We find a salt marsh here with marine plant species such as sea grape and saltgrass.
